How to get your business online – for free, the easy way

How to get your business online – for free, the easy way

Help – my wall is covered in Post-it notes!

A big thank you to the wonderful person who invented the Post-it note, BUT once your wall is covered from top to bottom in your online coaching business ideas – then what?

I always scribble my ah-ha ideas on Post-its. I can then rearrange them on my ideas wall to show myself how my classes or courses will flow. It is especially useful when planning my online programmes as I can see exactly what information my crowd need to know and order it all the right way. I can also move any unnecessary post-its away and really hone in on getting the right result for my lovely course peeps and not going off on a tangent (easily done!)

Er, what was this blog about?

Oh yes, knowing how to move from a wall covered from top to bottom in post-its to getting the ideas online and actually bringing in money. Oooh!

How to set up your online business(1)

When all you have is ideas and scribbles (even if they are super dooper scribbles) it can seem an impossible task to get it out of your head and make it a reality. There are SO many things you need to learn when starting out online that it’s really tempting to just crawl under the table with your favourite cuddly that you kept from childhood and forget about the whole thing – is that just me? Ah.

Oh my, it can be so overwhelming when you start to think about dipping a toe into getting your biz online. Argh! I need a website, a brand, to learn about every social media platform going, Instagram, facebook, twitter, google plus, tumbler and all the ones I’ve never even heard of, SEO and how will I ever get people to know about me, let alone buy?! And if I have to have all this new stuff how the **#! Will I ever pay for it all? How can I compete with those BIG online personalities? It will cost thousands!!

Eek – too scary. Hide under table.

Some people never get past this point, but there is good, no, great news [stage whisper] you can do it all for not very much at all and some bits are FREE!

It’s true it can be a steep learning curve but the great news is that with more and more small businesses starting up online more and more wonderful easy to use, non-techie tools have been created. Just for beginners, just for small business owners that can’t afford to invest in bespoke coded websites and fancy doodads and oodles of people to man a million complicated processes.

Once you start unraveling the online possibilities it is shocking how unbelievably easy and cheap it is to set up your online coaching business, build a website, build your biz in social media, publicise and advertise and build up a list of wonderful leads and gaining loads of effortless airtime for your expertise. Things that weren’t even possible a few years ago are now thrillingly open to everybody and a lot of the time, they are FREE! Yes, you can have an international business. Yes, you can get published and spread the word. Yes, you can be the go to lady and whizzy specialist in your market. The possibilities are endless!

Within the first few months of setting up The Business Beautician with NO investment other than my own time, I had a client in Shanghai, Brazil, Spain and Denmark. I love telling my hubbie I’m on a call to China (it gives me a thrill every time) but when you have an online business, it’s really not that big a deal.

So, how do we get from Post-it city to a real online business? What do you need in place to get started? What are the essentials for starting out? To demystify the online business world, here is a really simple, all you need essentials list to set your online coaching business off to the best start.

  1. Just a name – FREE

Not a logo. The big cheeses spend millions on fancy branding but you don’t have to. Your business won’t be appearing on t-shirts, merchandise (unless you are already planning an action figure range of yous) or glossy company brochures anytime soon. As a coaching business it is more important that your crowd get YOU, get super results from your expertise and understand what you have to offer.

Keep it simple – your logo can simply be your company name, or even your own name. No design fees necessary. Yay!

  1. Get social, but get specific – FREE

Social media is FREE. You can set up a business page or account, join groups, give advice, network and spread the word about what you have to offer. But it can be really easy to overdo it and try to get to grips with ALL the social media platforms out there (and there are a lot). Don’t end up like an octopus on roller skates trying to be everywhere at once – you’ll end up not getting anywhere.

Choose no more than a couple of social media channels to work with so you can really focus on getting the most out of it.

Choose the right social media platforms for both YOUR IDEAL CLIENTS and YOU. If you hate LinkedIn, don’t choose it as your main home because you won’t do it well. If you love Pinterest but your ideal customers don’t hang out there, then just keep it for your personal account.

  1. Set up a blog – FREE or very cheap

I know, this one sounds scary, big and expensive but you can do this easily, yourself and even, for free…

When you are just starting out the best way to shout about your offer is to show people exactly what you are about. Writing a blog is a powerful way to communicate with your crowd, show them how your knowledge can help them and get them easy win results. All you need is somewhere to post your blogs so your new enthusiastic crowd can find more from you easily. This can be your first online base – somewhere to send potential customers for more information about you and grow your crowd.

It needn’t be all singing and dancing at this stage, just easy to read, easy to find and packed with your expertise – the online world is constantly changing and so should your website so don’t think this is a forever site, just get it done and get it out there. Here are a few easy to set up (free) blogging platforms for you to start with.

WordPress.com – free
Blogger – free
Weebly – free
Pick one of their easy to use templates, get writing and get sharing. I recycle every blog on my social media pages, send them out in my e-newsletters and even use them to build my list through advertising.

  1. Build a list – FREE

The first time I sent an enewsletter was a revelation. I couldn’t believe that something web agencies had only a year before told me was a new innovation that would cost thousands in development was now free and so simple that I was convinced I must have missed something.

But it is easy, it has LOADS of functions, and it is free for beginners. Yay!

Set up a simple emarketing list. I use Mailchimp, but there is also Madmimi, Aweber and GetResponse. Set up a free account, create a list and you are ready to start building your crowd of people who will buy from you. Once you have a list set up you will be able to share the sign up form (normally through a simple link) which you can then share on social media and on your blog.

Newsletters are great for building relationships and trust with your audience, keeping you and your biz fresh in their minds and even selling to.

  1. Offer something for free – FREE

The best way to start building that list is to offer something for free.
Make sure that your freebie is something that will really rock your ideal customer’s boat. Create something that will get them one easy result and something that they can use immediately to make a difference.

you have sent out a survey you will have a good idea what your crowd need to know and what problems they need to solve.

It needn’t be complicated though. Remember that simple is best. Some of the big online coaching businesses still have a simple checklist as their freebie. An ebook should be short and to the point or a little video or audio series can be just the thing for your audience.

Try out a few and see what really captures your crowd’s imagination.

Once you have these 5 things set up and working for your business, you can then start to think about selling online, what you need to invest, what is working, what isn’t working and how your lovely online coaching business is going to grow. Exciting stuff!!

How to create your own online craft courses

How to create your own online craft courses

There is a reason your wonderful creations sell well, they are the result of years of practice, lots of failed attempts, pick yourself ups and try agains, determination, love and, of course, talent.

how to create your own online craft courses

You are an expert at it AND you are also an expert and knowing all the little shortcuts, tricks, obstacles and solutions that turn an iffy first attempt into an inspirational success. Your super power is knowing your craft inside out and upside down – the sort of expertise you don’t find in books.

That is just the sort of wonderful expertise that people will pay to learn. Your support and knowledge is worth just as much as your beautiful creations, or even more as you can teach lots of people at once.

So where to start with your online craft courses? What would people LOVE to learn?

Do you have the curse of knowledge?

It can be really hard to remember what it’s like for people starting out. It’s hard to peel away the layers and layers of knowledge built up over the years and go back to the very start of things when you gained that first ah-ha moment. What was it that sparked off your creative journey, what was it that sucked you into learning more and getting better and better at it and loving every moment of the adventure?

As a designer and techie geek I found it very hard to go back to the beginning and just remember what I struggled with to start with. I do remember as a lowly marketing assistant, back when I first started work, being tasked with creating an ad from scratch, myself and with no training. Eek! I think I spent a whole half day just finding out how to place one image on top of another. I googled it, but I didn’t know what terminology to use – what is a layer, a transparency, a jpg, a eps path or a tiff file anyway? I asked around the office and eventually got help from somebody in the Engineering room who happened to like photography who started me off on the right track with an, ‘oh, you mean you want to give it a transparent background’. Apparently I did.

I still find it hard to distil all the easy-to-me design expertise down to the very beginning of it, but when I do, this is the most simple and the most helpful, the most ground-breaking stuff for my crowd. And just like me, some of them are now hooked.

So what was the first thing that sparked off your love for your craft? What was the first project that got you hooked (no pun intended for the crocheters out there)? What are the basics that you had to learn to get your first WOW result?

When I put together a new freebie, class or a course I focus on getting my crowd a very definite result. So my Build a WordPress Website in 1 Hour tells them how to build a wordpress website, my irresistible freebie template demonstrates how to make their freebie irresistible and gives them the tools to do it, my free Christmasify your FB header took them through lots of Christmassy ideas and showed them how to create their own artwork.

Most of my classes and courses are a mixture of the practical and creative and it is a wonderful feeling to hear that my crowd have designed something they love for the first time or produced a website that is now selling. It’s a journey for me as well as them and makes me smile.

What could you teach your crowd to make? What would really impress them, teach them the basics of your craft and get them to produce something stunning first time? Once you’ve got them hooked, you can start to offer them more!

One of the best ways to find out what rocks your crowd’s boat is to ask.

Create a survey, pose simple questions on social media and ask some of your customers – what would they LOVE to know, what would they love to be able to create?

I release a survey every year for both existing and new peeps to make sure that the online classes and courses I offer are just the right level for my audience. I am always surprised by the answers – their problems are ALWAYS a lot simpler than I think they are going to be.

To find out what your crowd need to know and where they are starting from you could choose a few easy peasy beginner’s projects and see which ones capture their imagination. Ask if they would love to know how to make it themselves? Find out how they feel about giving it a go themselves and ask what would stop them attempting the project on their own.

online craft courses

Here are a few questions you can ask to find out what will rock and roll their boat:

  • Have you ever tried [your craft] and have you carried it on? – give an option of a number of years
  • If yes, what did you find tricky? – give a few options and a comment box
  • Show a few pictures of possible finished projects – ask them to tick which ones they’d love to make
  • What would put you off trying it yourself – give a few options and a comment box
  • Which other online craft courses have you tried?

You can give them options to choose from or let them give their own answer, but make sure you leave at least one question open as that is often the most revealing. You’ll end up with a really helpful list of ideas for classes, audios, blogs, freebies and even courses that will form the basis for your online product plan.

Take each idea and brainstorm everything around it, simplifying as you go. Each product, each class and course should get a great result for your crowd and teach them the basics without them even knowing they are learning. Focus on that one result and cross out everything that isn’t absolutely necessary.

Once you’ve done this you will have a fantastic list of possibilities that your growing audience would LOVE you to share – perfect for building your list of potential customers, your social media likes and follows, creating popular online craft courses and becoming known as the place to go if you want to make beautiful things.

How to create a best-selling super dooper online product

How to create a best-selling super dooper online product

Do you have the curse of knowledge?

It’s hard to know where to start when building an online business. There are SO many ways in which you help people every single day and breaking them down into separate online offers can seem impossible. Where to start?! They have SO many different problems? What you know is SO complicated – how can you possibly make it easy for people to use, without your help, online!! Why will people you have never met want to buy an online product from you? How can you make them understand why and how you can help them …. Argh!!!

STOP GUESSING!

It can be really hard to remember what it’s like for people starting out. It’s hard to peel away the layers and layers of knowledge built up over the years and go back to the very start of things when you gained that first ah-ha moment. What was it that sparked off your journey, what was it that sucked you into learning more and getting better and better at it and loving every moment of the adventure?

As a designer and techie geek I found it very hard to go back to the beginning and just remember what I struggled with to start with. I kept thinking they will need to know EVERYTHING I know. I kept chucking as much information as I could at them so they could start to get the results I was getting.

But they just ended up confused.

They didn’t want to do what I do. They just wanted to get a result, stop struggling with just one thing and start their design journey.

I managed to google the right thing. Layered one image on top of another and proudly sent my little advert off to print. Hooray!

I still find it hard to distill all the easy-to-me design expertise down to the very beginning of it, but when I do, this is the most simple and the most helpful, the most ground-breaking stuff for my crowd. And just like me, some of them are now hooked.

So where does the journey start for your clients?

What are they struggling with and what is the one (might be ever so simple to you) thing that will get them started on the right track?

One of the best ways to find out what rocks your client’s boat is to ask. Create a survey, pose simple questions on social media and ask some of your one to one clients – what was the one thing that really sparked it all off for them? What has most impressed them? When did they realise that, hey, this works for me?

I release a survey every year for both existing and new peeps to make sure that the online classes and courses I offer are just the right level for my audience. It’s so important to know that you are giving them the result they need at that stage. I am always surprised by the answers – their problems are ALWAYS a lot simpler than I think they are going to be.

To start to gauge the level of your online classes, try these sorts of questions out on your existing crowd…

  • What was the ONE thing that really made a difference for you?
  • What is the best result of our classes / sessions?
  • If you were telling a friend about my classes / sessions, how would you describe them?
  • What did you learn about yourself when working with me?
  • What are you still struggling with?
  • Why did you want to work with me?

You can give them options to choose from or let them give their own answer, but make sure you leave at least one question open as that is often the most revealing. You’ll end up with a really helpful list of ideas for classes, audios, blogs, freebies and even courses that will form the basis for your online product plan.

Take each idea and brainstorm everything around it, simplifying as you go. Each product, each class and course should address these problems and get a great result for your crowd. Focus on that one result and cross out everything that isn’t absolutely necessary.

Once you’ve done this you will have a vivid and accurate idea of exactly what you are brilliant at and exactly how you can apply that to solve individual problems for your crowd. I promise, they will love it and so, they will buy.

Getting the offer right is the difference between a big winning, life-changing, success pumping online business and a washed out, could have done better series of classes.

Put yourself in your client’s shoes and create an offer that they won’t be able to resist.

How to help more and earn more as a life coach

How to help more and earn more as a life coach

I work with so many ladies who LOVE helping their clients. Their number one goal is to spread their hard earned knowledge and change lives, teaching them to live happy, confident and joyful lives through techniques honed after years and years of experience helping and guiding people past their problems and giving them the tools to have fun and enjoy life to the fullest.

They’ve spent years learning, researching, living with and getting other people brilliant results and are passionate about the success of their methods.

But many people get stuck. They’ve built a wonderful local business and helped lots of people through one to one sessions and their reputation has built through the wonderful results their work brings people. But there are only so many clients they can help at one time. There are only so many sessions they can book into their day and, of course, only so much they can charge for their expertise. It can be a bit of a trap and both physically and emotionally draining.

So how to expand your business when you have no more hours in the day and can’t charge more for those hours to help the people you want to help? Your expert knowledge is worth so much more than there are hours in the day. To help more people and earn more as a life coach you need to start leveraging.

How to help more and earn more as a life

There is only one YOU.

There are only a limited number of people you can help one to one so you have to start thinking of spreading your expertise that little bit further, of teaching people in groups, enabling them to glean some of your life-changing core secrets and start to make that change for themselves. Because once you start to free your knowledge it can grow and multiply and help sooo many more people. And that knowledge is valuable, not only to the people it can help, but to you. It can bring you the money to expand and grow your business and the power to help you spread the word.

It can be a hard thing to understand how your knowledge can be given a life of its own, but it has worked for me …

I love to draw and I’m an illustrator at heart. I love to tell stories with my pictures and explore new characters. It’s what rocks my boat. I giggle when I think that I get paid to spend a whole day drawing cartoons or creating a beautiful photographic collage for my latest VIP design client. But although I KNOW I’m lucky to get recognition and be paid so well for just doing what I love to do, without the other half of my business I wouldn’t be able to move forwards and grow The Business Beautician. I wouldn’t have the connections, the wonderful community of lovely ladies who I support and who support me through my journey, the money to expand my business or the heart-leaping feeling of helping solopreneurs create their own beautiful brands through my classes and courses.

I’ve learnt to leverage my time. I now create simple how to design and how to be techie classes and courses that get my crowd playing with their own unique brilliance and creating radiant brands that work for them. I love it!!! It’s thrilling to hear that my lovely ladies have discovered a creativity they never knew they had and built something that seemed stupidly complicated and techie before with bouncy ease. What has always come easily to me, and the layers of knowledge and skill that I’ve built up over the years has been business changing for my crowd.

And it doesn’t need to be complicated. The best online classes and programmes are simple.

You might not think your hard won knowledge is revolutionary or unique or special but your crowd will. If they love what you do, they will pay to be able to do it too. You only have to create your class or course once and you can sell it over and over again. Suddenly your time and expertise is worth LOADS! And if you choose to work with some people one to one to delve deeper into your expertise with them, you can choose to do that too. You can take back control of your time and start to really focus on the areas you can help the most.

I’ve built my business online and gathered together a huge crowd of wonderful ladies who really get what I’m about and even laugh at my bad jokes (who knew?!) Creating an online business can offer you a whole world of people that would benefit from your expertise. You don’t have to hire out a hall, prepare lots of materials for everybody or worry about presenting in front of an audience.

I record my videos at home, using easy and mostly free technology, I produce worksheets, downloadables, freebies and audios myself to help my crowd get the most from my classes and sell through my own website. An online business enables you to help many many more people and communicate your passion to an audience anywhere in the world. It is truly amazingly awesome stuff!

So consider the next time you hear that your one to one client has made a powerful change in their life, how so many people out there would benefit from the basics, even the most simple parts of what you do. Your expertise is truly unique, the way you deliver your knowledge and the way you can see solutions that other people can’t – just a kernel of your insight is enough to start your following off on an adventure of their own.

Over to you – where does the journey start? What tools can you provide all those potential clients with to start an adventure with you and make some small but magnificent changes in their life?

Please share – are you ready to help more people and grow your business online?
